THE 1st 10 MINUTES.....

As planned, it's Post Mortem today.
I had a "heart to heart" session with my fellow students today in class and it was fruitful. There were a few high achievers. Two students managed to get 97% and 95%. Both are from 5 Harmony. That's cool....
What I'm concern with is the under achievers. It is not normal for a student in a Cluster School to fail a subject. Not Mathematics... Maybe Add Maths (at this early stage), but certainly NOT Mathematics...
Apart from Bahasa Malaysia (which is made a compulsory Pass), the next subject is Mathematics. If you fail Mathematics in your SPM, you have no where to go... Plain simple.. But the point here is not getting a Pass.
You have to score an A in Mathematics to have a good chance of getting a place in the University. And it's not that difficult...
Having heard their problems and difficulties in learning Maths and Add Maths, I have this to say:

1.   THE 1st 10 MINUTES:
It is very, very important to be in class when your teacher is teaching.
Whatever topic it is, the first 10 minutes of teaching, is the "whole idea" / concept of the topic. Listen and See what it is all about. Don't ask questions yet !! Stage 1.
The next 15 or 20 minutes is the explanation of the concept. If you don't get the idea yet, this is the time to ask questions related to the topic. Make sure you really, really understand the idea at this stage. This is called Stage 2.
This is the stage when the teacher gives a lot of examples to make sure the students really understood the main concept of the new topic. It may drag the whole period if there are many questions asked....

2.  THE UNDERSTANDING PERIOD:
It is very important for you to try out simple questions related to the topic/sub topic that have just finished.
This is where you test yourself whether you really understood the topic or not. That's why Mathematics NEED to do a lot of exercises. To make sure you really understood the topic or sub topic.
Sometimes, you feel that you can follow the explanation well and understood what it is about... But when you go back home......tut, tut...., you cannot do the exercises !!
If you had understood the concept well, you should be able to do the exercises without facing any major problems... Get it??  What students usually do is to COPY the answers from "The Answers" pages at the back of the text book or just PHOTOCOPY from your friend's exercise book, the next morning in school...  GOTCHA!!!
That's why your Maths marks are that bad.....

3.  TO TEACH IS TO LEARN TWICE.
I've always like this saying..."To teach is to learn twice".
To make sure you have mastered the concept, teach your friend... If your friend can understand what you're teaching, then you have mastered the topic !!! Precisely, when you can explain a difficult concept with ease, you are considered a MASTER in that topic. Try that to your friend... You have nothing to lose...

4.  TRY THE REAL EXAM QUESTIONS (Past Years).
Finally, you must try out those past years exam questions. That is a MUST. You must have the real feeling of answering exam questions. Problem?? Not enough time?  Find the time.... You have 24 hours a day...

What's the point of having extra classes everyday when you're not doing things right !!!
Just for some thoughts......

Have a nice day....
