KUALA LUMPUR: The report on a proposal to abolish the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examinations is ready, said Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi.
The report, which proposes to replace UPSR and PMR with school-based assessments, will be announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said the decision whether to abolish UPSR and PMR examinations or not had to be carefully done for the benefit of students.
"It has to meet our objective that stresses the importance of human capital development in implementing school-based assessments in our education system," he said after closing the Malaysia-Australia Education Project for Afghanistan (MAEPA) here Friday.
Muhyiddin had said that the decision on whether to abolish UPSR and PMR examinations would be announced after Aidilfitri.
The Education Ministry had held two roundtable sessions on the proposal to abolish UPSR and PMR examinations.
The first on July 19 comprised senior ministry officials, teachers unions, school principals, headmasters and counsellors.
The second on July 27 involved those outside the ministry such as teaching figures, academicians from public and private universities, politicians, non-governmental organisations (NGO) and interested parties. - Bernama
