PAGE submits memorandum to PM

PUTRAJAYA: The Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (PAGE) has repeated its call for the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics (PPSMI) be made an option in national primary and secondary schools.
This was contained in a memorandum submitted by PAGE chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the Prime Minister’s Office here on Wednesday. The memorandum was received by the prime minister’s senior private secretary, Mohamad Amir Harun.
PPSMI was introduced in 2003 when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was prime minister with the aim of improving students’ mastering of Science and Mathematics.
However, in 2009, Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced the abolishment of the PPSMI policy with effect in 2012, while Chinese and Tamil national-type schools could use their respective mother tongue for teaching and learning the two subjects.
Noor Azimah said the 2010 Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination results showed encouraging improvement in the performance of students in Science, Mathematics, English and Bahasa Melayu.
“Hence, what is thought by those against PPSMI that Bahasa Melayu will be side-lined, is actually not true,” she said. - Bernama
