Harumanis vs Sala.

A week ago, I was in Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam. I had a few feedbacks from my friends about the Perlis mangoes.. This is something that makes Perlis's citizens irritated...
It's about the Harumanis. They are selling "Harumanis" mangoes in KL, Shah Alam and Kelang at RM8.00 per kilo. It was not the Harumanis that they were selling !!! It was the Sala mangoes !!!And, the public easily got cheated....
Let me explain here.
 the Harumanis mango..
the Harumanis being sold in April and May only..
the edible flesh of the Harumanis..
The Harumanis is a seasonal fruit. This fruit is only available in April and May each year.. You cannot find Harumanis mangoes at any other time of the year, except April and May. Not yet though... It's got to do with the climate and the correct timing of the year. Unless, some R&D is done to change it to an all year round fruit...
The fruit is fairly rounded and is usually about 10 to 12 cm in length. The fruit is graded into A, B or C. An A grade fruit can weigh to about 400gm each. The skin of the fruit is always green whether it is ripe or not. The edible flesh is yellow to orange in colour. And one special feature is that: it has a sweet smell. Yes, sweet smell.. That's why it is called the Harumanis - Harum (smell) and Manis (sweet).
Harumanis mangoes are best eaten with glutinous rice. It is the local delicacy. It is best eaten when it is ripe, and is very fleshy. It is very sweet. A kilogram of the Harumanis costs between RM6.00 to RM12.00 depending on the grade.
The Harumanis is rare. It is only found in Perlis. That makes it so special.... Last year, it was exported to Japan. It was sold at RM100 per kilogram in the Japanese market.

Now, the Sala mangoes can be found all year round. The Sala mangoes is not seasonal. The fruit is quite long in length compared to the Harumanis. Normally, the Sala mango is about 12 to 15 cm long and it is NOT rounded in shape. It is green when unripe and somewhat yellowish green when ripe. It is sour. The ripe fruits are also sour in taste.
The Sala when half ripe - the best time to eat it...
The Sala mangoes are best eaten when unripe or half ripe. Usually it is sold when unripe. Local citizens usually eat the Sala mangoes with the locally made "garam belacan". The Sala is also suitable to make "rojak". The Sala is also suitable to make the "kerabu mempelam", a local favourite dish.
A kilogram of the Sala mangoes cost a mere RM2.00 to RM3.00. When there are plenty in the market, it can go down to RM1.20 a kilogram. It CANNOT go beyond RM4.00 a kilo.

So, Malaysians...don't get cheated !!
Have a nice day....

Is the harum manis already available now in April 2011? Where is the best place in Perlis to buy harum manis? I was in Perlis in 2010 but the harvest was poor as is the quality of the fruit. Half the fruits I bought were rotten(despite the fact that the sellers were recommended by Jabatan Pertanian). It was disappointing considering I made a trip to Perlis(from Penang) specifically to buy this 'king' of mangoes.I hope this year's harvest is better. Cheah

Cheah:
The harumanis is already out, BUT in its early stages. The fruits are already on sale at the orchard in Sg. Batu Pahat, Abi (on the way to the golf course). The price this year is a little bit expensive - RM13 per kilo for grade A, RM11 for grade B.
It's better to go inside the orchard rather than buy them at the street stalls because you might be cheated with unquality mangoes like you had last year.
Please see my other post on the harumanis (Sunday, April 18th, 2010) to get a better picture of to whereabout to get the fruits. You can ever eat them with glutinous rice at the stall INSIDE the orchard. It usually cost RM5 to RM6 per plate.
Good luck to you...

Thanks for your prompt comments and info on Harum manis. I read your other postings in 2010. Have you tried this year's harvest and is it better than last year to make it worth-while for me to drive to Perlis(from Penang) just to buy this fruit?
If I go this weekend or next weekend, will I get good quality harum manis? You suggest ABI farm? What about the Jabatan Pertanian in Bukit Bintang-do they sell there during weekends? I suppose harum manis will be out of season by end of May?

Cheah Penang:
Sorry to confuse you about the Abi/Bukit Bintang farm. Actually, it's the same place (as in my post in April 2010). It's just that we locals always refer the farm as in Abi. It's official name is Jabatan Pertanian, Bukit Bintang....
The Bukit Bintang farm is opened everyday and there's a stall inside the farm selling harumanis. You can even eat there with glutinous rice.
Please don't buy OUTSIDE the farm. They are fruits from the kampung folks and not guaranteed good. Do remember that.
The fruits are already on sale and you can come this weekend to have a taste of it. But the price, like I've said, is much expensive that last year. It might cost RM12 to RM14 a kilo. To us locals, it is considered VERY expensive. To you, it might not... Anyway, best of luck to you..
Thanks for commenting in my blog.
Have a nice day....

Dear Dess,

Many thanks for your reply and postings. I am particularly grateful for information from an orang Perlis who will know best. Certainly , last year I had problems finding the harum manis as the Jabatan Pertanian didn't have much to sell and they directed me to other places. I am very fond of mangoes and harum manis is one of my favourites! I will be making trips to Perlis this weekend or next just to buy this mango. Perhaps , I will see you there! In any case, thanks again for valuable information on harum manis

Hello Dess,

Been here in Kedah almost 10 years now... Just that, in these couple of years that I've known about Harum Manis. So excited to have a taste. I asked my friend who is staying at Kuala Perlis to buy a kilo or two for me. You see, she bought them at the road side along the highway from Arau to Changlun or to UUM. Was pretty dissappointed actually... I open 1, but it tasted SOUR... My friend said I have "TO PERAM" the manggo first, for a few days, and hopefully it can be eaten by then. Is thinking of going to the The Pusat Pertanian or ABI as you callad it this coming weekands (Labour Day). Nice coming accross your blog, will use your advice in BUYING the MANGO INSIDE the ABI and NOT at the OUTSIDE... Cant wait to have a REAL TASTE of Harum Manis...

areyn,
If you are an ardent fan of the harumanis, then I suggest you taste it first at the food stall inside the Jabatan Pertanian's Bukit Bintang (Abi) farm. They sell the harumanis dish eaten with pulut and santan at a reasonable price of RM5 or RM6 per plate.
Later, you can buy as many kilo as you wish from the counter INSIDE the farm...
Good Luck...

Dear Dess,
I drove straight from Penang on Sunday and reached the ABI about 11am. was surprised to see queue. There was a quota of one box(of 5kg) per customer. If I had arrived ten or 2o min later, I would have gone back to Penang empty handed. I went with a friend and we each bought one box and also another 8 more kilograms from outside the ABI. I've already eaten a mango even though it will only be ready for eating wednesday. It was good. I will let you know how the harum manis i bought outside compares with those from the ABI.
all I left is 4 biji harum manis for myself as the rest were given to friends. As a mango aficianado, I will be making another trip this saturday and overnite in Perlis so I can go buy the harum manis from ABI sunday. I was told that they start selling 10am daily. At least , I will be able to go to some places of interests in Perlis too , not to mention eating seafood at k.Perlis at night! Thanks a lot for your postings and info.

Yes, I was there at 11.00am to 12.00 (See my latest post - on Sunday, 1st May). Are you in the photos I took??? He, he, just asking...
Yes, it's true. There were not much fruits last Sunday. Everything was sold out by 11.30am. And the small restaurant there was selling RM4.50 for a plate of glutinous rice with 4 or 5 small slices of the harumanis.

cheah said...

Dess,

I had a look at your photos.Couldn't see the details of the people queueing but it's possible I may be in it as I was still there about 11.20am.I got one of the last 10-20 boxes of harum manis. I went to buy the mango pulut too after but alas after a queue of 20min, I left as I was too hungry to continue queueing.
I hope there's more harum manis on sale this sunday!

DESS said...

Dear Anonymous:
Thank you for coming to Perlis.
I'm very dissapointed to hear that you telah beli dgn harga RM15 sekilo utk gred A tu. Sepatutnya, RM9.00 sahaja.

He, he..

Hi Dess,
I made a trip to Perlis again(this weekend) because the harum manis I got from Jabatan Pertanian last week was superior. The harum manis I bought last week outside were different from the ones I bought from Jabatan Pertanian. The flesh were more yellow. The flavour is not so strong too.
Anyway I overnite in K.Perlis saturday and drove to Jabatan Pertanian sunday 8th may. I found Jabatan Pertanian now has a different system. You have to purchase coupon from 8.15am and collect the mangoes at 10am.needless to say, When I arrived at 10.15am, all coupons were already sold . In any case, the buyers who managed to buy when I was there got only about 1-2 kilo each. Of course, I ended up with no harum manis. In any case, I thought I should get some harum manis pulut back to Penang as the folks back home is expecting mangoes. This I got.
I bought abut 8 kilos of harum manis from outside at RM14 a kilo and will see if the quality is the same. They told me the fruit is from jabatan pertanian but they look very different to the ones I bought last week. for one thing , the skin is of a paler green. anyway, will post here on its flavour once this non- Jabatan Pertanian harum manis ripens.
Its a pity I didn't get the harum manis I came for but at least I had a good dinner at Hai Thien at K.Perlis saturday night!

The Harum manis sold Outside the Jabatan Pertanian office(at RM14 per kilo) is of poor quality. I bought from several stores outside and they are all poor quality, in fact worse than many of the normal mangoes. I have not had a single biji(out of about 15 kilos I bought outside) which is acceptable .

Cheah:
I feel so disgusted on hearing this.... Please accept my humble apology, on behave of the people of Perlis, for the experience you've got. I just don't know what to say about this.., except feeling VERY ANGRY with the harumanis seller outside the Jabatan Pertanian.. 15 kilos is too many not to have a single quality mango. You have lost RM210.00, not including other expenses.
And.., today, they are selling them at RM16 per kilo (outside) where the price inside is just RM9 (grade A).
My apology again...

harumanis hanya terdapat di Perlis SAHAJA kan? sy dikelirukan oleh sesetengah pihak yang mengatakan pokok2 di dusun @ halaman rumah mereka adalah buah harumanis...

DESS said...

Yes, only found in Perlis. Yang you maksudkan di dusun dan halaman rumah di mana tu?? Kalau di Mikasar (Pulau Celebes), Indonesia - memang ada variety yang seakan2 harumanis Perlis ni....

Hi,
I came across this page when trying to buy some harum manis online hehe..and only to know that the season has ended. Just curious, do ABI export to KL? Or where can I get harum manis in KL? Or can it be done by post?

I also found this page, http://harummanis.webs.com/ but not sure how reliable it is..in term of thr fruits quality, is it the real harum manis?

Hope u can guide me for next year harum manis season :D

Thanks!

DESS said...

Hi there Aan Andes:
1. At the moment, Perlis export the harumanis to Japan at RM100 per kilo.
2. We do not export harumanis to KL. It's just that some middleman make money by selling them in KL, Shah Alam and Klang on their own initiative. They usually buy the lower grades which cost RM6-RM8 per kilo and sell them at RM16-RM18 per kilo in the Klang valley.
3. The site that you mentioned is also the same case as in my No.2 note, as mentioned above. The only reliable goods is to come to the harumanis orchard itself here in Abi (or they call it Bukit Bintang orchard) and taste it yourself here in Perlis.
4. Thanks for commenting. Do visit my site again.
Have a nice day..

SALAM..
DIMANAKAH SAYA BOLEH MENDAPATKAN ANAK BENIH UNTUK POKOK HARUMANIS??

DESS said...

Dear Zul Izzi:
Anak benih harumanis boleh didapati di Jabatan Pertanian Perlis.

inarshad said...

Just in case anybody came across this website, please dont buy from http://harummanis.webs.com.

semalam baru balik dari kedah sedikit ralat bila xsempat ke perlis untuk beli harumanis..terbayang2 sampai terbuka blog ini, but then after reading your writing now i know when is the perfect time to go to perlis . Dah lama sgt x makan harumanis ..maklumlah ianya hanya ada di perlis ..nanti bila berpeluang kesana nak beli buah n benih sekali untuk tanam ..

DESS said...

This year - the harumanis was sold between RM18-RM22 per kilo. I was irritated by this "marked-up price" by those selling them. Bikin malu Perlis aja....
