SATUN International Kite Festival 2011.

What was supposed to be a lunch treat to my best friend, Ed, in Satun, Thailand, turned out to be something grand... We didn't know that an international occasion was going on in Satun..., the International Kite Festival 2011..

We took off late because another friend, Ustaz Bob, couldn't make the trip.. So, we left Kangar at 10.45am. Reached the border town of Wang Kelian at 11.15am. There was this Sunday market at Wang Kelian, where the border is open to all citizens of Malaysia and Thailand from 7.00am till 6.00pm. It took sometime to have our travel documents processed..
I took some photos.
Ed busy walking up and down to get the travel documents approved..
long queue..
passport registration...
got it on video...
carry your passport around...
Wang Kelian Sunday Market..
The Sunday Market goes on for about a kilometer from the border.
Loads of buses ferrying the Thais to the border..
We headed for Satun at 1.30pm. Reached Satun town at 2.00pm. We went straight to the Jetty Point to have our lunch there. There was not much of a choice at the food court. We just took a simple lunch...

Ferries from Langkawi, Kuala Perlis, Penang and Andaman Island..

We then headed to Satun town...and we came across the International Kite Festival. Wow...it was grand !!!
We spent some time there, watching the different types of kites from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and several other Asian countries...

 international kites....
 this is really, really big....
We went back at 5.00pm, assuming the border would be closed at 6.00pm. It turned out to be at 7.00pm Malaysian time (6.00pm Thailand's time).
We stopped at Beseri, in Perlis for capati and teh tarik. We met Ustaz Bob there, in Beseri... What a coincidence...
Two pieces of Capati and Teh Tarik...
That's BOB....he's quite dark...
well..., maybe I forgot to put on the camera's flash..

Reached Kangar at 7.15pm...

Have a nice day...

Hi you ;-),

First it is a nice post actually about the Satun 'International' kite festival. It just finish tonight.
I just like to add that the festival guest (invited per Satun municipality) was : Thailand, Malaysia, England, Germany, Spain, usa, French, Liban. This event happen every year for the last 7 years at least, and as you said, it is cool. International Kite festival in a city as Satun who actually is not yet spoilled with too much farang. Mean that it is a festival organize for Thai people ( that not mean foreigners not welcome too visit!!! but that it keep this 'local' touch).
I being leaving in Satun for 6 years and it is still something we are waiting for here.... But keep in mind that a lot of people still do not know about how beautifull Satun province is.... many waterfall, 3rd largest cave in the world, beautifull jungle walk etc etc.
And normally the border you cross ('Khuan don' for thai name and 'wang kelian' for Malaysian side)is only busy on the week end from Friday to Sunday evening. The process, in other way, just take few minute normally and for smart travellers who like to come in Sud thailand it is better and more fast if you arrive from Penang or even KL to take this way.... Sadao (or Hat Yai) border.... sometime much more slow......

Whatever thanks for your comment about Satun kite festival :-)
