The COACH-ATHLETE Relationship...

**This post is specially dedicated to LEE CHONG WEI and the Officials of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

To achieve a high level of performance in sports, especially individual sports, the relationship between the Coach and Athlete must be something extraordinary. Let's put it this way: Both are ordinary people who do extraordinary things.
The athlete may be raw or maybe a seasoned athlete in his respective sports. It doesn't matter. The point here is the coach could bring this athlete from the level he/she is at that particular stage to another level the athlete have never perform before. It takes time and there's a lot of ups and downs involved...
Let's go point by point:

1.  A good coach doesn't talk much. He knows what to do which others don't. Others here includes coaches and especially sports managers and sports officials who think they know a lot about that particular sports. These people are usually the ones who talk a lot but knows nothing about coaching. These are the ones who are lazy bums, always find glamour and travel a lot to attend sports meets for free (using government money and still claim for travel and expenses) but cannot even coach a school boy to win a district tournament. The real coach stays back home training his athletes and earns a small amount of monthly allowance from the National Sports body..., which of course is spent on his athletes while doing all the coaching (food, drinks, travels, attires, incentive gifts...).

2.  A good coach have this special "inner eye". He could see things others couldn't see. He could see the true potential in an athlete. Why not? He has gone through all the stages of being a coach - from basic coaching to high performance coaching. He has done all the research of being a good coach because he has the special interest in it. Officials have no interest in coaching because they are more interested in making money.

3.  A good coach usually drives a second hand car. His car is his second home. The car is full of sports accessories and sports equipments. Mineral water bottles are everywhere in the car. He doesn't have time to wash his car either. On the contrary, sports officials drive brand new cars and are always shining...

4.  A good coach usually doesn't possess a degree from universities. He is not stupid. It's just that he doesn't have time to further his studies due to his love for the sports he is coaching. He is hooked on coaching. On the contrary, sports officials have degrees and masters from sports universities. But it's just that. Only paper work and no practicals. If there is, it's just 30% at the maximum. The rest is open book exam results and theories of sports management. No coaching there !! And he earns a handsome income monthly...
Coaches go through 70% practicals when going through their coaching courses (Level 1, 2 and 3). It's hands on !!!  The final exam is only 30% at the maximum. And he gets RM700 allowances per month.

5.  A good coach doesn't have time to go for holidays. He is "married" to his athlete. 90% of his life is devoted to his athlete. He doesn't even have time for his wife and kids.... He has his coaching schedule to follow in order to achieve the desired results of his athletes.
Sports officials have 90% of his time to his wives and family. He comes to work at 8.00am and goes back at 5.00pm. Actually, he is seldom in his office.. He might be on the golf courses or attending self-organised seminars in 5-star hotels or holiday resorts...

6.  The performances of athletes goes up slowly, according to the programme laid out by the coach. There's no short cut to success and it might take 3 to 5 years for the athletes to give results. Once the athlete reaches  that level, the hard work had already been done. It is up to the athlete to maintain the form he is in. It's only the fine tuning that is needed to be done and it is important for the athlete to be self dependent.
Actually, that is what athletes should be. You cannot depend on the coach all the time... You have reached a level where you can survive without the coach around.. BUT, to chance coaches is a SIN !!! You are considered ungrateful if you do so.....
Do not listen to sports officials because they know nothing about coaching.... Bare that in mind !! If you do, you are bound to face injuries.. Trust me. Your programme will be different and you are courting troubles..

7.  Lastly, just flash back where you were before you were under Misbun Sidek. You were nothing. Nobody knew who LEE CHONG WEI is... You went up the chart to be World Number 1 under Misbun Sidek. You beat everybody, including LIN DAN because of the programme drafted by MISBUN SIDEK.. Just bear that in mind....

Good Luck Lee Chong Wei... and blame yourself and BAM if don't win the GOLD MEDAL in the 2012 Olympics. But if you do win the gold medal - you'll get RM1,000,000, your new coach Teh Seu Bock gets RM200,000 .. and your coach of 5 years, Misbun Sidek, gets NOTHING !!!!
And to MISBUN SIDEK..., you've done wonders to MALAYSIA. Thank you very much... Maybe you should start thinking about coaching Ramdan under Nusa Mahsuri ....

Have a nice day....
